building platforms, bleachers and a stage. even the voters have yet to decide who will address the nation from here. the latest gallup poll gives president obama a five-point edge nationwide but a new poll from north carolina shows virtually no bounce even after the democratic national convention was held there. >> we have always believed that this will be a very close race and that continues to be the president's belief. >> reporter: with less than two months to go the intense ground game heats up especially in battle ground states like ohio. >> he does not have a plan. his idea is that obamacare and a stimulus are all we need. i don't want obamacare and i don't want a stimulus like the last one. >> reporter: ohio say popular swing state for both campaigns with 18 electoral votes. >> the average of the poll does go show the president is ahead. it's very tight and it's going to stay that way. i really do think it will be all the way through november 6th.

>> reporter: the ad blitz is also intensifying. the president pulled in 114 million in august compared to romney's 111 million, but the gop has more in their coffers overall. >> mitt romney has a ton of money for the general campaign he has not spent. >> reporter: the next big game changer could be the presidential debates. there are about three weeks until the first of three. in washington jennifer davis, fox news. turning to the developing story out of chicago where the city's schoolteachers have gone on strike leaving hundreds of thousands of children out of class, negotiations are back underway at this afternoon, but the strike is causing a lot of friction. reporter darlene hill is live in chicago. can you tell us what's the latest there right now? >> reporter: hey, maureen, this is the first strike in chicago in 25 years attracting a lot of national attention because we are talking about 350,000 students that didn't go to class today and, of course, this is happening in president

barack obama's hometown. that strike was announced last night two hours before the midnight deadline. that left parents very little time to scramble for what ctu was calling their plan b, what to do with their children while they're at work. both the teachers union and the schools say the pay raises are reasonable, they're okay with that, but teachers don't want pay increases after this first year tied to student performance or the state's standardized tests. that's where it gets kind of sticky. negotiations are going on now and so is the big rally. we're joined here live with jeff murkinright now. talk a bit about what's going on. how do you feel? you've been in the system 13 years. how do you feel about being out here wearing red and showing solidarity and you know your students didn't go to class? >> one, i'm proud to support the union, but it was extremely disappointing to get up this morning and be in front of our school and marching around

protesting as opposed to being able to work with our kids. >> reporter: how long do you think this will be going on? >> i would love to be back in the room tomorrow. we just started school. to have it interrupted like this, i wish that this could have been settled beforehand, but obviously there are other things going on. so definitely like to see it get settled. >> reporter: thank you. a lot of parents are feeling the same way in the chicago public school system, because the one thing about it knowing your children are in class is knowing they aren't on the streets and here in chicago we've had a lot of gang violence that's been getting national and international importance and as well as our homicide rate is up. >> thank you for that report tonight. several toddlers hospitalized today after they were stung by bees during a fire drill. it happened at the tempe manuel school in kensington -- temple

[ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approved this message. it's been 2 1/2 weeks since honor student amber stanley was gunned down inside her home in kettering. there is a community meeting tonight to answer questions from concerned residents. fox 5's karen gray houston is live on chartsey street where the shooting happened. what do police hope to accomplish with this meeting? >> reporter: to tell you the truth, police seem as baffled as neighbors about this mysterious shooting. the meeting is an opportunity to exchange information on all sides. somebody for some reason barged into amber stanley's house right down the street here, kicked in the door to her bedroom and shot and killed

her. now police are really trying to draw residents into this meeting. they've posted the time and place on an electronic billboard around the corner on watkins drive. the meeting is at 7:00 tonight at kettering community center. a spokesman says the purpose is to get the community up to date on the investigation and to also receive information from the community no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. we know that amber was a promising and popular student, a senior at charles flower high. she was in an honors program in science and technology and hoped to attend harvard university and become a doctor. police are unsure if amber was the target or if the shooter might have gone to the wrong house. we know that her mother was raising her and another biological daughter and also caring for a foster teenaged girl. residents are looking forward to the meeting tonight. they want to find out as much as they can. some of the neighbors tell us they are frightened this kind

of violence happened so close to home and police will be looking to them to get some answers. back to you. >> let's hope they do get some answers. thank you. a maryland man detained in aruba in the suspected death of his traveling companion is being sued by american express. the lawsuit seeks to void an amex travel insurance policy that gary giordano took out in robyn gardner's name just before the trip. giordano was arrested after gardner went missing in aruba last year. a judge ordered him to be released back in november because of a lack of evidence. coming up he's within part of some pretty high profile case -- been part of some pretty high profile cases. now a police officer who spent his career fighting criminals is fighting cancer. we'll have his story. >> plus the west nile virus is back with a vengeance. dr. oz joins us live tonight to tell us how big the problem is and some other infections we need to know about at the bottom of the hour. >> does letting babies cry it

[ romney ] i'm mitt romney and i approved this message. in tonight's health alert a new study shows behavioral training to help babies fall asleep does not seem to have any negative or positive long term effects on kids. researchers found the 225 6- year-olds who participated in sleeptraining were in different in terms of emotional health from babies who did not go through sleeptraining. the study also found no difference between the two groups and the degree of closeness between children and their parents. a new study shows postpartum depression may affect a child's height growing up. research shows children of depressed mothers were 48% more likely to be short than those mothers who didn't suffer from postpartum depression. here's the reason. maternal depression is linked to four feeding practices,

nile we know a mosquito borne disease. what about the hantavirus and bubonic plague? >> we'll see more of these with the weather and climate changes and we also is issues with global travel. let's talk about hantavirus. you've got a closed shed or attic you haven't been in a while, hantavirus is passed when the poop of mice gets aerosolized. open the windows and doors and thayer place out or use some kind of -- air that place out or use some kind of mask when you first go in. the death toll is low, i suspect many more actually have been infected. west nile is a good example. 4/5 of people don't show any symptoms. >> it's scary. a lot of my friends and colleagues bitten by mosquitoes. as i understand it, the number of these west nile cases nationally at its highest since

it was first detected 12 years ago. so what's going on and can you talk about symptoms we should be aware of if we are bitten by mosquitoes? >> the summer weather played a role in this. the most important thing is to focus on never having standing water around you and i'm not talking about swamps. i'm talking about flipped over garbage can lids, beneath plants where there's water accumulating. stay away from standing water because mosquitoes breed there of the look for a regular feeling flu, but you'll building exhausted tired and have a headache -- be exhausted tired and have a headache, malaise. if you should feel that, get seen by somebody. the good news is the vast majority of us get better by ourselves. >> let me change gears looking ahead to your show, a focus on women's health tomorrow on tuesday which really sets the stage for a big yet interview

i don't think that women's health issues have faced a crisis like this in decades. the washington examiner is reporting two more places on the brand-new intercounty connector are cracked. is taint sectors found the cracks, one on the bridge over route 29 in briggs chaney and one on the ramp in the very same place. the cracks are small, but the examiner reports state officials say they need to be repaired. inspectors found similar cracks in three other bridges earlier this year. we have a traffic alert to pass along tonight. if you normally drive over the memorial bridge, you may run into some delays, more than usual anyway. bridge repairs are now underway. during the construction project two eastbound lanes will close from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and two westbound lanes will close from 9:30 a.m.

right? 71 degrees around 7:00. 66 at 9:00. this is in town. out in the suburbs it will be even cooler, 63 degrees at 11:00 with fair skies. overnight tonight we're talking again upper 40s, lower 50s. that's what you get. look at that. not a cloud in the sky. when high pressure is in control and it really looks like if all things stay the same this, high pressure is going to be dominating all week long. this afternoon we got a couple what we call fair weather clouds building up. there's a little colder air aloft, so that happens. tomorrow we'll get a few of these fair weather clouds, but as we get into wednesday, probably thursday i don't see much in the way of even cloudiness at all. so tonight 58 here in town with a light wind, clear skies, pretty much perfect for what we call radiational cooling. so again out in the suburbs we're talking upper 40s, maybe even a few spots could get a little colder and as we get in tomorrow, a chilly start, here in town around 60, a few places

>> reporter: patrick canty hopes to someday trade in his pop warner gear for an nfl jersey, his plans for college, harvard, stanford or uconn. on this day he's getting high praise for being a hero. >> i was mostly calm, but i was acting very quickly. >> reporter: the 12-year-old acting quickly in the face of danger on route 95 on saturday morning. patrick says his father was driving when something went wrong. >> the car started going really slow and he wasn't registering anything in his mind. so i knew something was wrong. >> reporter: patrick's father suffers from seizures and began to have one right on the spot. so the 12-year-old took the wheel. >> i turned the car into the breakdown lane and i shut it off and we cruise a little bit until the car stopped. >> reporter: once the car stopped he reached into his dad's pocket and called 911 this, as he kept his 9-year-old sister who was in the car out of harm's car.
